Notes

Based on Ancient Greek ἀπολύω (apolýō), meaning release, acquit. Composed of ἀπο- (apo-) "away, off, from", and - λύω (lýō) "loosen, untie, release." That yields something akin to "release, loosen from". There's a sort of pleonasm in the construction, but ἀπο- adds the idea of separation from something.
