The Sindarin Supply Wordbook

A Neo-Sindarin lexicon containing 612 entries.

This site is intended to serve as a comprehensive dictionary of words that can be used for Neo-Sindarin compositions.

The dictionary contains not only words attested by Tolkien, but neologisms, coined words and phrases, crafted from Primitive Eldarin, Noldorin, Gnomish, and Quenya, tagged with perceived level of acceptance and source (when extant), cognates, phonetic development references, logical structure, and added comments.

The majority of the neologisms I made are submitted to the Vinyë Lambegolmor server for scrutiny. But because the review process is a bit murky and takes a long time to get the word accepted, I have graded them on a scale from 0 to 5, so the user can identify the various stages of reliability of the word.

The words chosen to make into this dictionary prioritise cross-language wordlists, like the Swadesh lists, the Leipzig-Jakarta, the Longman Defining Vocabulary, the Intercontinental Dictionary Series (IDS), and others. These are meant to cover most of the essential human vocabulary, and it is my personal belief that the majority of the words in these lists need to be represented in this dictionary as single lexical items.

Most neologisms are based on existing etymological concepts. When possible, inspirational real-life equivalents are provided. The same standard serves for the absence of certain neologisms. If I think they are too arbitrary or lack etymological basis, they might be ommited from the list.

Neologisms may change with time based on feedback. Keep an eye on the words you use.
